Buried under 20 feet of ash by Mount Vesuvius in 79AD. See how the Romans lived their daily lives. Buried next to Pompeii, this lesser-known Roman villa was the Opulent(Oplontis) vacation home of Emperor Nero's wife. Between the more famous Pompeii and Herculaneum the smaller site of Oplontis suffered the same fate.

This area was dotted with many suburban villas and residences, mostly used for holidays, but also farms and bath complexes. The archaeological site today comprises two Roman villas, the Villa of Poppaea and the Villa of Lucius Crassius Tertius.

What Makes This Tour Special

This tour includes a transfer from Naples to the Amalfi Coast with a timed 2-hour stop at Pompeii, allowing visitors to walk through extensive ruins and see both public and private Roman structures. The inclusion of Oplontis as a nearby site enriches understanding of Roman villa life beyond Pompeii’s urban center.
  • Direct transfer from Naples to Amalfi Coast with efficient timing for Pompeii exploration.
  • Two-hour guided exploration at Pompeii, focusing on daily Roman life and architectural details.
  • Opportunity to learn about Oplontis villas, less frequented but richly decorated Roman residences.
  • Combination of historical sites with scenic travel along the Amalfi Coast route.
  • Insight into Roman imperial connections through the Villa of Poppaea.

Historical Background

Pompeii was an ancient Roman city buried under approximately 4 to 6 meters (13 to 20 feet) of volcanic ash and pumice after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The sudden disaster preserved buildings, artifacts, and even casts of victims, providing a detailed snapshot of Roman urban life. Nearby, the archaeological site of Oplontis contains two large Roman villas, including the Villa of Poppaea, thought to have been a luxurious seaside residence linked to Nero's wife.
